Forward Thinking

One of my most important notes to myself when I started this blog was “Be Positive. Do not use your blog to whine about stuff. Nobody visits blogs to hear more whining than they usually hear”. However, let me please whine a little once is a while. And today’s whine is about the stuff that passes off as “Forwards”

I really have to admit one thing. I judge people a lot based on WhatsApp. But No, I don’t judge those who read every forward and “LOL” at each joke or comment about each video. True, they seem to have too much time. But if they are able to complete all their work in spite of their unlimited WhatsApp time, then good for them.  Similarly, I don’t judge those who leave WhatsApp groups without so much as a goodbye or those who hardly ever reply. They have their reasons, no doubt.

But I do judge people based on what they choose to forward to groups. I am not going to give many examples but just the basic categories.

  1. Forward this to 3 other groups and the Pakistan flag will change to Indian Flag, Forward this to 5 groups and the balls will start bouncing, Forward this to 7 groups and the battery of this phone will charge to 100% and all that guff. What are these people thinking? How can forwarding something to seven groups recharge your phone’s battery? I am completely unable to wrap my head around this gullibility.
  1. There are 4 Sundays, 4 Mondays etc this February, this is a rare thing that happens only once in 823 years. Chinese Astrologers say it is lucky. When there are 28 days in a non-Leap year’s February and a week contains 7 days it logically follows that (28/7=4) each day will occur 4 times. This is nothing special at all. Pure maths. But here, I mean any forward that will only require a look at a calendar, or perhaps a calculator to refute it. Google will willingly help too. I read something about Israelites having more Nobel Prize winners than any other country. This is not so. Why do some people lie so much? Why do some people believe it so foolishly?
  1. Some things about the toerings that Indian women use making them super fertile and the sindoor making them super awesome and other stuff about the earth’s magnetic force running through their body and energizing them. I totally hate it when people say “Scientifically Proved” without thought and others start believing them without any effort to check out how Scientific experiments are really carried out. If they give reasonable example regarding how these experiments were carried out and how these things are inferred then that is different. But just throwing around words “Even the Scientists were baffled” does not make every story true. Why is that people can’t see this?

And my main confusion is this. Is it wrong to point out that these information are false? Should I just keep quiet? To some friends I send a private message about the real information about the forward. But most times I have to let it go. For no one likes a smart-aleck. But all this is so sad. I have a dream, that we will start living in a thinking world.

  1. 🙂 You’ve mentioned my pet peeve. Here, I got to just looking up Snopes.com and forwarding them a link that debunks whatever urban myth they are forwarding. They usually drop me like a hot potato because they don’t want anyone disagreeing with their pet theories. Stuff about women’s sindoor and toe rings? Delete, delete, delete. I don’t even bother to read them.

Which is why I am to not to be found on any ‘group’ on Whatsapp; I’m not on FB and email is easy to filter. Long live technology. 🙂

  2. Let me add another,
Example 4: Freeze lemons and grate it over all the food you have, every day, each week, for one month. Lo and behold, you will not get Cancer, ever. Pharmaceutical companies do not want you to know of this secret. Follow it show that you care for your family and friends.

There are some groups in my Whatsapp which are permanently on ‘Mute’ mainly for these reasons. I second Anu, rant more: it is fun and I feel vindicated by them. And not to forget, ‘it is not just me’ is a great feeling. 😀

  3. You ladies are so kind. 😀

Ah those cruel, cruel pharmaceutical companies. If only they didn’t love money so much.

I believe we really want simple cheap remedies to complicated diseases to bring back a semblance of control to our lives. I do not want to diss lemons, or gingerly oil or any of the other magic cures but these forwards just show how much we are scared of the big demons like cancer, heart attack etc. On one end we need to learn the power of local herbs to harness the gift of natural remedies and on the other hand we should not get carried away by all this.

The weirdest things I heard were not forwards but from discussions with particularly gullible fiends who just lap these things from weird sites or magazine columns or even self help books. I tried to explain that scientifically proven theories cannot just use scientifc sounding words like Energy, waves, magnetic fields and what not. The harnessed energy and all the magic should be actually measured, documented, analysed and peer reviewed.

Just one example, we should always use our right leg to start journeys because the earth spins from right to left. our ancestors knew so much, aren’t we the greatest race the world ever saw?

  5. Wanted to add to this… forwards like ” please send this message to 10 to get blessed or good luck , blah blah..

most irritation forward till date: women have magnetic energy during their period and they attract all positive energy . That’s why they are not allowed in places of worship.

@rahini David : fan of yours. Really love the way you think and write

  6. Thank you, Nithya. Very kind of you.

That “forward to 10 people” was something I was about to put as a part of point one itself. This is apparently not just a part of Internet culture. It existed before that. S.ve shekars vanna kolangal once parodied such gullible people. I should see if I get the YouTube link.

  7. nithya: Could you forward me a few links for ” women have magnetic energy during their period and they attract all positive energy . That’s why they are not allowed in places of worship.”

I have been going through quite a few posts on periods today, and would love to hear about this particular argument more.

The above links are from a blog which is run by people who go around and spread awareness about menstruation to rural adoloscents (which is what the About section claims, atleast). I am not aware of them much personally, but these ‘explanations’ from them are something that I am unable to dismiss as balderdash, like I usually do with sindhoor makes you super fertile thingies, but I am unable to fully accept it too.

  9. Madhu: thanks for the input. I have been reading up about menstrual taboos almost obsessively for the past few days and I did finally come across these two links. I am not going to comment on this right now as I am writing a pretty long piece on this rather complicated topic.

My thoughts on the topic are not as kind as yours. More on that later 😃

  10. Regarding the toe ring theory, men are also made to wear them at the time of wedding but are allowed to remove it right away.

If Sindoor protects some chakra in woman, dont men have that chakra too?

How many ways to protect Indian women, tie rings, sindoor, isolationn during periods etc etc but still have endure so much and worry about their safety in India.

I feel like choking the person who posts on facebooka crap about mensturation, sindoor etc
